Jim Becker was correct.
It is a ring of felt. I took it out again when I had the time. Looked at it in good light with a magnifying glass, it definitely is felt. Very dirty felt but felt. Wrong twice in one week I'm on a roll. Glad my wife don't read this forum. Whew!
