Clutch Problem

Postby Don B. » Mon Oct 12, 2020 7:32 am

My clutch on my 51 Cub stopped working. I can push the pedal all the way and can't disengage the clutch. Only have resistance from the pedal spring. Assuming the throwout bearing probably vaporized, I split the tractor to have a look. Surprised to find that the throwout bearing is worn enough to replace but was still basically intact. Pressure plate and clutch disc look pretty good. Clutch fingers all even, ready for a small adjustment but tolerable.
Since I went from a adequately functioning clutch to zip all at once, I expected to find something that had abruptly failed. I did not. My question is the following:
Could the clutch pedal lever have spun on the clutch pedal shaft? :|

The adjustment bolt at the pedal has not moved.

And perhaps the pilot shaft bushing.
I have an excuse. CRS.

that lever is held by a notch on the pivot tube and the bolt fits in that notch, possible but doubtful, you can look down the tube with a light to see it, it has a 3/8" bolt with a 9/16" head on it, or just pull the bearing retainer out and grab the rod its hooked to and pull, probably a bad pressure plate

Yeah, Tim. Looking at the manual, I thought the bolt was in a notch. I did try to pull and push on the rod and couldn't get it to show any play but that's a little different leverage than I would have pushing the clutch pedal with my foot so I wasn't positive.
The pressure plate seems to be fine. Everything seems smooth and nothing seems misaligned. Springs all look good. I have removed that and the flywheel because I will be replacing the rear main seal while I'm at it.
Pilot bushing and input shaft seem ok.
Right now I am leaning toward adjusting everything, putting it back together and see what I got.

Toss it all on the trailer and bring it to Shallow creek and let us help you. I think we have plenty of firewood for the weekend.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Bill, I think I'd need a closed trailer to keep from losing all the loose parts at this point.

My first thoughts are either the pin that attaches the push rod to the throw out bearing holder has come out, or the one that attaches the other end of the rod to the shaft.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hi,
Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the clutch pedal, you can see the cut in the base of it, at the left of the pic. The bolt in the clamp goes there. :)

John, The more research I did the more I considered the possibility of one of those pins being broken. Almost ordered a couple before I split it.
But they are perfectly fine.
And Glen, It seems it would be unlikely to spin that clutch lever piece on that shaft. Well, unless the bolt fell out, but I can see that mine is intact. Also, if none of you guys have seen it, I'd call it near impossible.

Could the weld that holds the plate on the clutch pedal that adjust the clutch be broken off the shaft?

John, Interesting thought. I checked to see if the freeplay adjustment bolt had slipped. Didn't consider the weld. Hard to believe but I will look at that area closer. Thanks.
