Governor spring
I’m basically going through a checklist to solve an issue I’m having which is it’s not throttling up all the way. One of those things was replacing the governor spring. I got the old one off, I took the hood off as well as the arm that comes out the left side of the engine. No matter what I do I can not get the new spring on. I spent 3 hours messing with it before I packed up and called it quits. Is there anyone that can walk me through this or has a video showing how to do this?

Re: Governor spring
One thing that helps is to cut a little off each end of the spring so the gap is bigger. That makes it easier to get the spring thru the holes.

Re: Governor spring
I just ordered 2 more springs. I think I took a tiny bit too much off one end. I get it to where I think it’ll hold and one end pops off when I move the linkage.

Re: Governor spring
Any tips on actually installing it would be great. I have to wait for new springs as I cut too much off on end but there’s got to be a quicker way to do it than the 3 hours it took me just to have it pop off.

Re: Governor spring
Hi,
I use a needle nose, or strong pliers, and twist the end of the spring to the side, the wire at the end of the spring, so the end gap will open, and it will go over the metal and the end go in the hole.
When I did it, the ends spring back to the original position.
I think it works better to put the top end on first, but not sure, I haven't replaced one lately.
Yes, don't cut off too much of the spring end, the ends are made like they are so the spring doesn't come unhooked, or fall off during use.

Re: Governor spring
Would a pair of external snap ring pliers work. When one squeezes the handles the working end opens. Use it to open the hook on the end of the spring till you can slip it on. Being a spring it should open and spring back. Just a thought.

Re: Governor spring
Nelson 364 it may work. Certainly worth trying. Thanks for your input as well Glen. Got another 2-5 days before the new springs get here. As I said I got two more so if I damage one trying to get it on I’ll still have another one. 2 springs and shipping from Steiner was just short of $40.

Re: Governor spring
I remove the lever and clean the staft and the hole in the lever and lube it. This should be done anyway once in a while and replacing the gov spring it is a good opportunity.
I slip the spring in the lever loose and muscle the lever back on the shaft.

Re: Governor spring
Like they said, cut just a tad off and then slip the top on first. I use a string to pull it down through the open area under the bolster then you can usually work it right on. We used to put several on at cub fests that way.

Re: Governor spring
Thanks everyone. Attempt number two will be when the two springs get to me. I will post an update.

Re: Governor spring
I took a welding rod and knocked the flux off, bent a small hook on one end and bent the other end at a right angle to form a handle. Hook the top end of the spring in place and use the small hook on the welding rod to pull the spring in to place from the bottom side. This is sorta the same as the string method that was mentioned earlier but the welding rod has the strength to manipulate the bottom hook on the the spring easily. I’ll take a picture of the rod tomorrow when I get in my shop. This worked so well for me I put the rod in my box of home made cub tools

Re: Governor spring
This is a picture of the rod I bent. It’s slightly different than I described. I have a loop in the end opposite the hook. I believe I stuck a screwdriver through the loop for a handle.

Re: Governor spring
Thanks I’ll have to see if I have something like that laying around. The forum has given me a few good ideas to try.
