Back after a long absence...

Hi, I could not find my old login info so I re-registered. I have a 1958 Cub LoBoy that I mow with in the summer and plow snow with in the winter. This site has been helpful in the past and I may need some help now. My PTO gears are stripped and I can't use it to mow. Are there manuals here that describe the PTO gears and shafts?
Is this a common problem or is it just that she's such an old dog? Everything else works pretty well considering the age of the machine.

You'll need to pull off the PTO. The pin on the lever often wears down to the point that it doesn't move the PTO clutch far enough to engage the splines on the input shaft. If you go to Quick Links (upper left of the screen), then PDF manuals, you can find the Service Manual that gives directions to R and R if needed.

As Bob said, the most common problem I've seen is the shifter pin being worn. Also, there are two types of PTO shafts: the earlier ones had a staked bearing that could wear down and allow the shaft to move back, uncoupling the PTO shaft and causing grinding. The newer ones had a retainer clip.

I wondered that as well. I was also curious if you were still a diesel fuel technician and interested in British Motorcycles.

Below is the Cub and LoBoy service manual, it has lots of info.
The PTO is in section 6A, I would read it before beginning the work.
Disregard the info about the Belt Pulley Attachment, if you don't have it. :)

Here is an example of a worn pin (left) vs a good one (right). Will keep grinding and popping out if worn

The one on the right is also worn, just not as badly. That pin should be round, with no flat spot.

You can also replace the worn pin with a piece of drill bit stem of the right diameter.

Wow! As usual lots of of good info.
Bob, Great! Found the manual, which has way more detail than the version I found on my own.
Jim, I knew it must be tamalecks, but lost track of the password and pretty sure I was using a different email back then.
Barnyard, Man, I can't believe somebody remembers me from so long ago. I haven't been a diesel tech for at least 14 years. I had a short spell at a Case IH parts department, then got a great job running the service department of a rental company. Now I'm semi retired and working in the parts department of Tracker Boat Service at Bass Pro in Auburn. Still into British motorcycles. In 2010 I picked up a '67 Royal Enfield Interceptor 750 twin and brought it back to running condition.
Thanks again everyone for the responses. I will probably be delayed a week or two before I open up the PTO. The tractor has been running well except for the PTO. It had an easy winter last season as it did not snow much here.
