Is this a good plan?

Postby Jose Wales » Thu Sep 10, 2020 6:37 pm

My 59 Cub was brush painted by the PO and everything is heavy coated with big runs. I have most of the grease cleaned off and changed the fluids. Re-sealed the gas tank also. I think a coat of rust-oleum to keep from further rusting while I get it running would be the best idea before doing a good paint job would work for now. There are several broken bolts that need to be taken out and other maintenance that needs done. The mud dobbers have even filled the exhaust pipe, the closer I look the more to be done. Painting should maybe come later as it will be a large stripping job. Would you recommend painting later?

Fix what needs fixing and get the Cub operating properly, then it is time for paint.

Make sure you run it for awhile so the leaks are discovered now rather than after you pretty it up.

After you get all the issues fixed a needle scaler will work well removing paint from cast surface but not sheet metal. Chips away with long metal rods and loosens paint. A little noisy but more comfortable than sandlasting. Got one from Harbor Freight. I never sandblast anything with bearings and seals. Sand can find it's way into everything. Remove all the tin and strip with blasting, sanding or paint stripper.

many people paint too soon. The rust you have took 60 years. Just use oil spray to slow down rust now while you work on the mechancials.

I love Fluid Film. It was developed for the navy as a safe lub and rust inhibitor. it base is lanolin - the oil in sheeps wool and last a long time.

from amazon

STOPS RUST & PROTECTS METAL ON THE SPOT. THIS NOT A OIL. IT A WOOL WAX FORMULA

WILL NOT FREEZE, GREAT FOR BATTERY TERMINALS, FREES RUSTED PARTS

Rain cap, next thing or at least a glass jar on the exhaust pipe. Keep the critters and stuff they drop in - out.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Personally, for a temporary exhaust pipe cover, I would use a can or plastic water bottle...mainly because I often forget to remove it before I crank her up, and it goes flying!! Don't think I want to clean up the broken glass!
