Reinstalling the valve cover with new gasket

Postby Dale Finch » Tue Sep 08, 2020 6:36 pm

I was adjusting the valves on my "new" '51 cub, and when done, cleaned up the valve cover mating surface, and installed the gasket with Indian Head Varnish on the cover side only. Once I was sure it would stay on, I was ready. But since I had not removed the carb, is was a VERY tight fit getting it back into position. I decided to cover the valve opening with a piece of visqueen so it would be slick with no snags to pull the gasket off. Worked like a champ! Once the valve cover was in position, all I had to do was slide the visqueen out from under the cover, and bolt it in place. :D

Slick trick (no pun intended!) I went through this with my LoBoy a couple months ago, and it is a tight fit!!!

I was wondering if the carb and hydro lines had to be removed to get that cover off. Now I know now.

I need to pull the manual about adjusting them.

It's pretty straightforward. Here's a HOW TO for that.
viewtopic.php?f=141&t=46322
I just didn't want to deal with making a new carb/manifold gasket and readjusting the carb/gov rod! That's why I left the carb on. It really is easier to remove the carb!

One note, I find the easiest way to find TDC is to remove #1 plug, insert a cork, then rotate the engine with a handcrank until the cork pops! Align the pointer with the TDC notch on the pulley. Then as the HOW TO says, adjust 1, 2, 3, 5 to .015 cold. Rotate the engine one full revolution, again to the pointer/notch, and adjust 4, 6, 7, 8.

Get comfortable, have a good light (headlamp works well) and be patient! I usually finish, then rotate the engine a few times and check them one more time...just because!
(OK, everyone here knows I'm a "bit" OCD!! )

It's about as hard to get the cleaning done behind the hydro lines/carb as it is to get it back on. Maybe Dale has discovered the magic trick.

I have a complete line of wire brushes, from long-handled things with scrapers, to ones the size of tooth brushes. It takes me FOREVER to do the simplest of tasks, because I am so darn compulsive!!

In fact, I just bought a tapered wire brush (like a bottle brush), so I could clean the grit and gunk out the implement holes!!. Worked great!

I propose a new forum titled Hints From Heloise. OK, better yet, Hits From Dale.
I have an excuse. CRS.
