It would have been better to try the brake drum on the shaft without the key, to see if the 2 parts fit snug, before putting the key in.
You didn't say if you changed the shaft.

The brake drum may have needed to be hammered onto the shaft because the new key was tight in the keyway.
It would have been better to try the brake drum on the shaft without the key, to see if the 2 parts fit snug, before putting the key in.
