What doess this lever do?

Postby Jose Wales » Wed Aug 12, 2020 4:47 pm

I have looked thru several diagrams for this lever on my tractor but yet to find it. It is located at the right rear top of the transmission housing. The lever is 4-5 inches long and there is a slotted plate to limit fore and aft travel. It doesn't move at this time but I would like to know what is it for. Hope it isn't too dumb of a question for you guys.

Sounds like the PTO lever. Look for PTO operation in an Owner's Manual. If that isn't it, post a picture.

Thanks, I googled it and that is what it is. It is broken off and looks like a ten penny nail replaced the shift lever, That is what confused me. Sorry to have wasted your time . My first Cub, I did restore a 8n a while back but am not familiar with the cub yet. Glad to have this forum for help.

Jose, you are never wasting our time asking a question. That is what we are here for.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Here's a picture of the PTO shift lever. It does look like a nail head. Your's may be okay. http://www.tmtractor.com/tm-tractor/gpt/rod3_001.htm

Depress the head of the shift lever to engage/disengage the PTO.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Hi,
The PTO lever, and info is shown in the 1959 Cub operator's manual that I posted in your other post.
It is on pages 5, 19, and 20.
You have to press down on it to move it, it locks in the off and on positions.
If it is frozen and doesn't push down easily, it needs lubing down in the spring area with penetrating oil, and loosening up by working it down and up.
The PTO might not engage every time you try shifting it, the splines in it have to align with splines on the shaft that drives it. :)

And mower stopped if it had been working.
