What is this bushing made of?
I am replacing this bushing. The old one had to be pressed out of the lever and the bolt is frozen in the bushing.
Is it supposed to be steel, brass, bronze?
Is it supposed to be pressed in?

Re: What is this bushing made of?
Mine is an oilite bronze bushing and is not pressed in. Can't guarantee it's original, however. Two years ago I had another 54A and had to find a bushing since it was missing. TSC, or maybe Amazon, had a near perfect fitting oilite bushing. The OD and ID were a perfect fit, just had to trim a wee bit off the length. If you do, cut the length to fit the bracket, not the arm. It should be a wee bit wider than the arm so when you tighten the long bolt it tightens on the bushing and doesn't bind the arm. The arm should pivot freely on the bushing.

Re: What is this bushing made of?
the factory bushing was steel, not pressed in, it was a loose fit, that is why the hole in the arm wears out, when the bolt is tighten the bushing does not move but the arm moves on the fixed bushing wearing the outside of the bushing and making the hole bigger in the arm, if the hole is not worn badly the perfect bushing replacement is a piece of 3/8" iron pipe, just cut to size

Shouldn't the bushing's purpose be to protect the lever from wearing?

It is steel and loose fit.

Yes, that's why a pre-lubricated porous bronze oilite bushing makes more sense. I can't image very many owners over the years remembering to squirt some oil on that original steel bushing every now and then.

The bushing's purpose is to protect the bolt from being worn. If I were redesigning this with modern day techniques, I'd weld a larger diameter bushing through the lever and install press-fit flanged bronze bearings in either end of the bushing.

Add a grease zerk fitting on it.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Re: What is this bushing made of?
The main reason the bushing is there is so the bolt can be tightened and the arm will still be free to move. There is a similar bushing at the pivot point for angling the blade.

Sure you would, then the guy who's job it is to reduce manufacturing costs would come along and replace it all with a press in steel bushing......

Re: What is this bushing made of?
I think for the limited amount of use, the small amount of movement, and the slow speed when it does move, I will NEVER wear through my pipe bushing in my lifetime. Even if I do forget to give it a squirt of oil.
So if you're putting bronze bushings and/or grease zerks here, what have you done at some of the other "oil squirt points" that are (my opinion) much more critical and wear prone on a Cub?

Re: What is this bushing made of?
The piece I pressed out of the lever was 1" od x 5/8" id and 1 5/8" long. The bolt had to be cut off to remove the lever. My 20 ton press will not press out the bolt from the bushing. My supplier found busings that size but they are around $20.00 each. She is working on finding something more reasonable.

Actually, it is impossible to find. I better edit that.
