oil pressure gauge

Postby tomstractor » Wed Jun 10, 2020 6:58 pm

I am replacing the gauge at the base of the oil filter with a new one on my 48 Cub.
The gauge has only the red and white areas. The new one just
moves to the top of the red. I checked the pressure with a gauge that I use as a tester. The tester reads 35lbs at idle. The company that I bought
the replacement gauge from says that it is a 75lb gauge and this is normal. Did some Cubs have a high pressure gauge or is this guy wrong.

The early model cubs with the red/white areas were 0-45 psig (I believe). Not sure when (I believe in the 70's) IH switched to the 0-75 psig gauges. Cub oil pressure on a new engine is supposed to be 30-35 psig at 1800 rpm.

The oil pressure relief valve is set to open at 35 psi on the Cubs. Your 35 psi reading is the maximum oil pressure and excellent.

You were sold the wrong pressure gauge.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Hi,
They have said on here that the 75 lb oil pressure gauge doesn't work well on Cubs, Cubs have a maximum oil pressure of 35 lbs, like was said above.
So with a high pressure gauge, the pointer only works in the lower area of the gauge.

TM Tractor has oil gauges that they say they had made in the USA to look like the originals on Cubs.

The 1st one was used in 1947, and until they changed to the IH emblem.

The 2nd one has the IH emblem.

The 3rd one was used beginning in the mid 1950's and has numbers. :)

I have #3 on the '59,works great. I did go and look at the '49's it still has the original gauge.Even with it turned off the gauge is reading right on the line between the red and white  might be time for a new one there as well....
