Lost.

Postby Lilduke88 » Wed Apr 22, 2020 8:38 pm

I have a 57 loboy that I put new rings in. That is it. It ran pretty good before. Now I can not get this thing to start. I put in new rings, plugs, points , condenser, coil, battery cables as per the directions in the how to section here. I set the tractor at TDC and took the distributor cap off and the rotor is pointing at about the number one wire. When I took the number on plug out it is wet with fuel and it makes a nice blue spark. It seems like a Timing issue but I’m not sure how the timing would have gotten off. If I have fuel and spark it should run if it is close to being in time or am I off on something. Thanks ahead of time.

I did not test it but I just put new rings in. If I put my hand on the carb intake I can feel good suction.

Put a tablespoon of oil in each cylinder. If that doesn't work, pull start it. (connect tow strap to the towbar and put the tractor in 3rd gear)

Did you pull the distributor to put the points in, or disturb the timing ?

I did take the distributor off, from what I can tell it still looks like it looks in time. If I put the engine at TDC the rotor is pointing at the number one wire.

Re check timing.. Number one piston must be on compression stroke.

Ok I will. Thanks. It seems like a timing issue but it all looks correct. I have been wrong before.

It isn't enough for the rotor to be in the right general direction. The points need to open at TDC. Follow the timing instructions in the Owner's Manual.

I followed the directions and now I have the points open at TDC.Still no start. I am getting good fuel flow to the carb and spark. Still lost.

Seems simple, but are the plug wires are going to the correct cylinders?

I checked that a couple time. They are according to the manual.

Does it occasionally fire when you are cranking it or nothing at all? Sure sounds like you have everything you need, but like you said, just not at the right time.

It will try and start but doesn’t get anywhere. I’ll mess with it until the battery dies then I have to stop for a couple hours.
