No reverse

Postby Figo40 » Tue Apr 14, 2020 7:58 am

Good morning,
I have an odd problem and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I was grading the driveway with the cub the other day and everything worked fine. When I went to park the tractor, I back it in to a small space, I had no reverse after about two feet. There was no noise, no bogging of the engine.
Back into first gear and it was fine. I tried to throttle up in reverse and it just sat there, acted like the clutch was engaged. put it back into first gear turned around and pulled into the parking space no problem. Any Ideas?
Thanks!

Agree with Tim, my '49 was doing this and I welded it back together.

Well, I found the problem. After pulling the top off the transmission, everything was great in there. I put it back together and fired it up. Pulled out of my parking spot turned around and started to back in. Same thing happened! no reverse after a couple of feet! I look down and see the right rear rim spinning but the tire is not!. It was a flat tire and just enough slope to the ground to spin the rim inside of the tire! Damn I feel dumb!

Good news is you don’t have to worry about breaking the bead to get the tire off.

when i tore my transmission off my '52 i emptied it onto my bench and out rolled a ball and a small trapezoid shape of metal. The ball was a detent - and both were where they were supposed to be, the other piece was broken off a fork, but both forks worked. apparently the PO changed one fork because it broke, left the broken ear in there and lost a detent ball to boot... would never have guessed a low tire!

Lessons for all of us, look for the simple explanation first. How many of us had the tractor die and stood scratching the head wondering what the—- is wrong, when it was simply out of petrol. I was starting the Cub one day and was wondering why its not starting, I had forgotten to turn on the petrol
