Right Front Tie Rod Connection
Hi all - sure miss being here more often. I'm getting ready to put Rex'48 through its paces this year. One thing bothering me from the restoration is the right front tie rod set screw. When I did Rex over - the screw I took out, had been ground down to be more flat and broad, so not as tapered. If I recall it was just a bolt with a lock nut on it. It seems, I can't get and keep it tight with the proper factory bolt in there. Perhaps the hole is elongated ? What's a good repair that lasts in this area?
Best regards to all, Ken

Ken, could there be a piece of the old bolt in the bottom of the hole?

Re: Right Front Tie Rod Connection
Hi Ken,
If there is no broken piece of setscrew in the hole, and the original size setscrew won't tighten in the hole, then the hole in the spindle shaft is probably worn bigger than it should be.
Some people on here buy another spindle shaft, JP Tractor Salvage might have one.
The wheel bearings and hub have to be put on the replacement shaft, unless they come with those.
Then the bearings would probably need checking and greasing.
To weld and build up the hole in the one you have, you would need someone that can cut a tapered hole in it again, the original size.
If you buy another shaft, you could buy the newer style, like your 1955 Cub probably has, with the key in the shaft, but you would need the arm to match too.
Since you restored the Cub, you might want the original style.
Below is a pic of the hole in the shaft, from TM Tractor.

If I was younger I might remember what it looked like when I had it all apart.

Hi Glen - so much of my Cub is original I'll try to avoid other parts but I'll report back after I disassemble. As always thanks for your prompt reply and good details.

Emery cloth and polish up the back side of the hole shown in Glen's post. You will see a circle, end/point of the set screw taper. Pin punch and knock out the point of the set screw.
Order a new set screw from TM.

Thank you. It'll be a couple weeks but I'll get into it. We're going to be planting a fair bit of field corn this year. Gonna need Rex, fully operational.

Re: Right Front Tie Rod Connection
Hi,
If you find there is a broken piece of the setscrew in the hole in the shaft, remove the arm, and then turn the front wheel around 1/2 turn, so you can get at the back side of the shaft to hammer the broken piece out.
Park the Cub on a cement floor and you can probably turn the wheel around, or jack it up if needed.

Re: Right Front Tie Rod Connection
Thanks for the good tips. I got a good laugh at the cement floor. The rest of it is all doable.
