Re: rebuilt motor ?
Normally the factory engine would be much tighter than that; it's a pretty sure bet that the engine was rebuilt, possibly more than once.

Re: rebuilt motor ?
Yep, rebuilt. That's a good thing. It's not likely that the engine has been worn out twice.

Re: rebuilt motor ?
At .030 over, that engine has likely been rebuilt twice. Most likely once to just replace the rings (same pistons) and cleanup the bores with a quick scuff and a second time to do a full bore job and replace the pistons.

Re: rebuilt motor ?
thanks guys , at first blush it was a little disappointing , thinking original , but i can see the advantage , especially if rebuilt " right" . runs great , great compression . I guess it shows a previous owner who cared for it .

Re: rebuilt motor ?
At .030" over, this engine still has lots of life left in it. You should get about 2000 hours to a rebuild and still be able to bore it one more time to .040" over. New .040" pistons are available. That would give the engine another roughly 2000 hours of life.
- For most users, that is still another 30-40 years of use.
After that, additional boring to allow for sleeves may restart the process back over at factory spec pistons. These engines weren't designed with sleeves in mind, but creativity and necessity may invite such innovation.

Re: rebuilt motor ?
It is a 100% parade / cubfest tractor , will see only " light " duty from this point forward . serial # and engine # very close ( '48, trimmed dash ) . going to keep it that way . Thanks everyone for the info . I'll do what i have to do( $$ )

Re: rebuilt motor ?
All just guessing on how many times it was rebuilt due to the bore size. Could of had a wrist pin failure causing it to gouge the cylinder bore and took .030 to clean up- you'll never know and it really doesn't matter.

I have 0.60" over pistons in my engine which had a broken rod when I bought it. It was out of a power unit.

And engine life is extended even further! These little tractors may live beyond the electric car revolution!
