Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
I have had the old Cub torn down for over 2 years. I usually do a good job of keeping everything together and labeled. For some reason the fan was not fitting right and the alignment was off. Looking at Cub#2 there appears to be a flat spacer that mounts between the fan/pulley assembly and cast support on the block. I am not sure if this was missing all along, or did something with it. I can't find this piece in the 49 parts book on here or in my '79 parts book. Does anyone know what this part is I am talking about and how to find a part number?

Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
It goes on the other side of the cast support, between (#2) spindle and casting on radiator side. Almost acts like a spacer that makes the fan and crank pulley line up.

Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
If I'm not mistaken, that IS where #1 goes. There is nothing on the engine side of the slotted cast forks holding the shaft, except the nut, which is seated between the forks in the recessed slot. That nut does not turn, as you probably already know. The shaft flats (13/16") are what are turned to tighten the fan in place.

Dale-
Seems as though you are 100% correct. I had a washer and a nut in a bad labeled fan hardware, and it worked out fine. I do not know what this spacer is on my other Cub is. Clearly not factory, but it sure looks like it could be. Thanks for your help!!

Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
Hi,
The washer, number 1 in the parts manual pic above, goes on the fan shaft in front of the slot in the engine front cover. It is just off the shaft in the parts pic.
Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the fan, you can see the thickness of the washer in the pic.
They are about the thickness of 2 or 3 regular washers, just a guess.

Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
you never know what you will find on these cubs by previous owners . one fan of mine has a thick piece of sheet metal about a inch and a half square as the #1 washer . they ground the washer down and use it on the "nut" side , you can tighten the nut without breaking the ears on the cast fan mounting arms . works fine so i still use it . coppersmythe..........................Sadcub wrote:Dale-

Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
Since no one has posted the dimensions of the spacer, here goes...
1 1/8 OD, 11/16 ID, 1/8 thick.

Previous Owner Idea . On my '48 cub , factory , i doubt it . but it works "washer" was ground down to fit in the groove of the cast fan "holder" You can tighten the nut without breaking the "ears " of the mountSadcub wrote:I have had the old Cub torn down for over 2 years. Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
In that application, I think I'd use a lock washer or a Nylok nut.

Re: Flat spacer between fan pulley and cast support
As can be seen in coppersmythe's second photo, adding extra washers etc. causes the nut to fall short of full engagement of the shaft. The shaft needs to be very tight so this isn't good.
