I have several quarts of 85w140 gear oil sitting on my shelf. Does anyone see a problem with using this in a Cub transmission?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

If it's Gl-5 I'd not use it due to bushings incompatibility..
Better than nothing in a pinch , but there's GL-4 's that would be closer to ideal.

It says it exceeds specs for gl4 & 5.

Should be fine then.
Maybe a heavier viscosity on real cold days , but it's not an intricate ,or high speed deal.
You have a spare tranny ( or thirty) around there anyways probably ...

Replacing one this weekend at DSCF. I'll probably swing by TSC in the morning and pick up some 80/90. I just wanted to use up what has been sitting around a while.

PTO shaft pilot bushing is bronze. Not sure if there are any other yellow metal components.

That bushing is not normally exposed to the gear lub.

I'm reluctant to recommend non spec stuff on a forum.
Lots of leeway on some gear sets when well cut and matched in good condition.
An old joke in one shop used to be that you could pee in some gearboxes and they'd run. Some smaller ones were longtime leakers when I started and they survived the abuse.
Don't want that kind of neglect in our Cubs though.

That said , the heaviest fluids I've used have been in the slowest/high torque gearboxes. Greatest load capacity transfer carts come to mind as an example. My crude figuring has the heavy viscosity stuff having less throw off or fluid flowing off gears when a gear is at top of /highest position from bath.
Teeth need room though. Many have room , but that needs confirmed if not known.

Or running a heavy lube where a thin one should be in fresh or tight gears can cause a difference in resistance or pressure somewhere. (Like a belt too tight can worry a shaft or bearing more than the pulley(s) it rides on).

Aren't you an expert on these things??

I am far from an expert, but I don't see any issue with useing it on the old school gears and bearings.

I add the moly gear oil additive or use the moly gear oil. Barnyard I use the 85w140 oil you have. I have 5 gallons of synthetic gear oil someday I’ll use up too.

My equipment deserves the best.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Nope, I never claimed to be, that is why I asked. :)
