Ampere Gauge

Postby wrz » Sat Dec 14, 2019 3:28 pm

It shows a good charge at slow and medium engine rpms. As soon as you move the throttle to higher rpms the gauge needle jumps all over the place.Any ideas out there.

put a meter on it and see if it reads ok, if the meter is jumping also probably a charging issue, if it reads steady more likely the gauge, analog meters work better on old charging systems than a digital meter

Are we talking about a system with a cutout, or a regulator? If cutout, most likely the commutator of the generator armature needs smoothed out. If a regulator, could still be same thing, but might also be bad regulator, or poor ground on regulator. Also check condition and tension on both generator and fan belt.

Today I narrowed it down to the regulator. All I had to do is tap the side of the regulator and the needle would jump around. The next step will be to clean the contacts in the regulator and see what happens.

How will you clean the regulator contacts? With a file?

They make special very fine, very thin files for that, NAPA sells them, ignition files.
