throwout bearing
I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor on my 51 cub and it is getting close to being put back together. My question is: Do I replace the throwout bearing just because it is apart or do I leave the old one in it? It has some wear but it worked fine and it doesn't look too bad condition wise (I think). Thanks in advance for your input.

I wouldn't replace the throw out bearing. Just grease it and smear some grease on the face.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I agree, you've got lots of miles left. Just make sure the fingers are adjusted correctly.

...and use the cheapest grease you can buy, no high temperature stuff. You want the oil in the grease to soak into the graphite bearing.

Re: throwout bearing
Hi,
You could check the wear in the holes in the throwout bearing holder, and the wear in the holder's top pin.
The parts should not be worn, so the holder does not move side to side, or up and down excessively.
TM Tractor has a new holder, and new pin, if needed.
Lube the pilot bushing, and the end of the shaft with grease, when putting the Cub together.
When putting the pressure plate on the flywheel, tighten the bolts gradually, going around the flywheel, it loads the pressure plate springs as you tighten the bolts.
The people on here say to check the pressure plate finger height, and set them to 1 1/4" from the surface below them. Try to set the tops of them as close to the same height as you can, so they form a flat surface for the throwout bearing to push on.
Below is a pic of where to measure. The height is measured with the pressure plate assembled on the flywheel, not off, like the pic.

Re: throwout bearing
If any changes are made how thick or thin is the clutch disc? I always put in a new disc if the pressure plate and flywheel look smooth.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Re: throwout bearing
Thank you all for your help. The pressure plate and flywheel surfaces are in excellent condition. The the disc looks almost new...it still has the original printing on the wear surfaces from when it was new. I will make certain that the fingers are adjusted, when installed, as per the image above.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

Re: throwout bearing
If you are painting the tractor as part of the project I would replace it. If not leave it. It would bother me to split the tractor on a 1 or 2-year-old paint job to replace a part I was looking at when the tractor was apart and not painted.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
