Max speed pulling manure spreader

Postby Ol Timey Farming LLC » Sat Oct 05, 2019 11:13 am

I'm picking up a manure spreader today. It's only a few miles up the road, but I don't want to damage it transporting it home. I think I saw in one of the spreader manuals that 20mph was max, but I'm not sure and hope y'all can chime in before I need to beat the rain moving in.

Forgot to mention, its about 5 miles, very good tires, no dry rot. But I do have to go through town so 5mph is out of the question, but at same time I'm not racing home either. Just wondering what a safe max speed would be.

Ok, can I borrow yours? Ain't got a trailer or else I wouldn't have asked about transporting it by roads. Just be sure to get to Petal Mississippi before it rains@ 2-3pm tonight. (JK-btw)

Go slow and put an SMV triangle on the back. You may want to take a grease gun and grease the hubs if they have zerks.

If it were me I'd do as Bob McCarty mentions and just take it easy all the way. I don't think I'd go over 10-12 mph. Hug the shoulder, if folks are behind you pull over and let them pass, keep your 4-ways on. Getting home safely without breaking something on the spreader is your goal, not keeping tailgaters happy.

I once pulled a wooden spoked vintage farm wagon home that way. Most folks will understand and the ones that don't, ehh.

I brought mind home behind the pickup truck. Reasonably slow to be sure. The clack-clack of the cam on the wheel was sort of a speed limiter in that I thought it wise to keep the speed so that it was reasonable, not whirring. For a few years I'd take it back to where I bought it help empty their manure pile. Same proviso -- slow does it. Distance was probably more or less 10 miles. Take it easy.

Thanks to everyone with constructive ideas, got her home safe n sound just before it came a floodn. Also put out an acre of ladino clover in my partial shaded areas I recently cleared and where trees along property line shade parts of my crop fields. Rest of fields will be put in fixation (balansa) clover as soon as I can get into them as I just chiseled and disked them so they are a muddy mess atm.
