'48 cub generator and cutout

Postby MoRedMan » Sat Sep 07, 2019 8:59 pm

Hey all
I'm in need of a new generator and cutout for our '48 cub. 6 volt negative ground. Anyone have any sources? I didn't see anything on TM tractor.
Thanks in advance!

That would be positive ground. Do you not have one or do you have one that doesn't work? The generators can often be repaired with a minimal cost for parts.

For the cost of a cut out or regulator and generator repair you can convert to 12 single wire alternator.
I have an excuse. CRS.

You can buy a new cutout from Brillman.

Our 48 is supposed to be negative ground?
It's serial number 16466

It came from the factory 6v, pos ground. Reading one of your previous posts regarding 48 Cub wiring, it appears that someone replaced the original generator with a Prestolite negative ground generator.

I guess that would be the main problem with your 6 volt generator.......polarity is reversed and you most likely toasted to voltage regulator. I would turn the battery around replace the voltage regulator and “flash the field” on your new regulator and you should be good to go!

Put a load on the electrical system (lights for example) with the engine not running. See which way the ammeter moves. Maybe it is actually charging now but looks like discharge because the polarity is backwards.

Hi,
Cubs before mid 1964 had 6 volts, positive ground electrical systems.
Delco generators are all the Cub parts manual shows.
Below are pages from the 1949 Cub owner's manual showing the generator.

This page below shows the gen closer.

All Cubs before serial number 115403, which was in 1950, originally had a cutout, or Relay, IH called it, on top of the gen, like the pages above show.
They used the 4 position charge and light switch. You had to control the charge rate yourself, using the High or Low charge positions on the switch.
The Relay is not a voltage regulator. The voltage regulator came out at serial number 115403.

The pages below tell how to use the 4 position switch, starting at the lower left of the page.

For the original Delco gen with a voltage regulator, the Cub owner's manual says when polarizing the gen, do not touch the Field post, it will damage the voltage regulator.

Below is a page from the 1955 Cub owner's manual with info for polarizing the system, beginning at the lower left of the page.
Jim B has said on here that the Relay system is polarized the same way.

If your Cub has a different brand of gen, then it could be polarized some other way. You would need to find out how to polarize it.

I found your post from last year saying that it is a Prestolite gen. Here it is below. :)

If you wanted it original, you would need to put on the parts I wrote about above.
Or you could do what Eugene wrote above.

The Delco 6 volt positive ground gen, for use with a Relay, was model number 1101355, you could do an online search for the number and see who sells them.

I apologize for the senior moment yesterday!
It is a positive ground, and I want to replace the incorrect generator it currently has.
I have the original light switch currently. Might replace it for peace of mind, but I am in need of a correct generator and cutout.
