This little piece of land is hard to get to. There is a road and creek and tree line. I sometimes go years without cutting it. Well, I finely cut a path into the woods so I did not have to use the road access. I was met by 3-4' weeds that were wet from a morning shower.
No problem for the woods 42!

Re: Got to Love a woods 42 and a well tuned cub
Woods 42 is my favorite mower for that kind of work. Making the trail through the woods should help you keep after it. Next year a couple cuttings and it'll look like a lawn.
I'd be back there with the sickle Cub though to take a pass or two along the creek and get farther back under the tree line. Then I'm sure I'd try cutting off at least one of those guard rail posts over by the road with it..

It is 5-6 ' to the bottom of the creek i did not want to be too close! I have several sickles but non mounted. That is on the shortlist for the cub projects.

Re: Got to Love a woods 42 and a well tuned cub
I have 3 cubs with Woods 42's...they do a terrific job of keeping our farm looking great! If those pastures look shaggy, it sure isn't the mower's fault...I'm just being lazy!
After seeing a fellow forum member post about his ending up in a creek/ditch (?) last year, I have been quite conservative about mowing along the Haw River side of our property. With the VERY wet spring we had, we have lost as much as 20' of river bank, so I no longer trust the edge...it's about 15' high above the river, and there is undercutting. Time for the weedwacker!

Plant willows, what ever type is native to your area.Dale Finch wrote:With the VERY wet spring we had, we have lost as much as 20' of river bank, so I no longer trust the edge...it's about 15' high above the river, and there is undercutting. Time for the weedwacker!

Willows, very fast growing. Just stick a branch in the moist soil, it grows. Very good for erosion control.
Check with your local conservation commission.
Since Woods 42 is the topic, I really like my Woods 42. But, when I slug it out with tall grass and weeds, bigger tractor.

Re: Got to Love a woods 42 and a well tuned cub
I just started using my woods 42 here recently. Actually it cuts better than my woods 59 to my surprise. Haven't bush hogged with it yet, just finish mowed and very pleased with it. Not sure if I actually like using my 59 or 42 better.

Re: Got to Love a woods 42 and a well tuned cub
Far less load on the cub with the 42. The 42 would be considered a rough cut style mower but is gives a nice cut at lawn height. So I think is does a fine job at both but you give up 17" of cut per pass.
The 59 is a finish mower and is fine for lawns but once you get into the high stuff the Cub can not give it enough power. I think is it more of a one-trick pony.
I just got a 130 that I have to get running. It has a 59" deck. I want to give that a go and see how that works out.

Looks like it did a good job on your 3' high weed patch. Don't have a mower for my Cubs, but may some day.

Yes this works!
We had a stream behind my home growing up and we had one willow tree my dad planted in our lawn. I jammed branches I cut from it into the stream bank and a few grew into beautiful trees.
Quick too!
