I can't adjust the throttle linkage correctly. When I adjust the rod going from the carb to the governor I get 1 of 2 problems by only turning the rod end 1/2 a turn (you can only adjust it 180 deg. at a time). but on one setting I get the right top end rpm but then when I lower the control rod to low the rpm's barley go down. If i turn the rod back 180 deg. then I get low rpm's but at full throttle my rpm's are low. What am I doing wrong or is there another adjustment I'm not doing????

Set it by the Service manuals instructions first.

Tension on the governor spring by setting handcontrol lever is the starting point.
Depending on your set up ,that could be halfway through the levers range ,or somewhere else.

Of note :
Governor to carb control rod adjustment is made so that "with throttle wide open" the rod slides into throttle lever easily. Then add one turn of rod to put tension on spring.

I'm not saying you didn't put throttle in wide open position to fit rod ,but that could jam you up if you didn't.

In adjusting low idle using the carb air screw by the manual you run the hand lever for throttle up and down it's range to test after each adjustment.

A tachometer is recommended before messing with high idle adjustment at the governor.
Unless something is way off on yours ,the idle screw can be used to find compromise between high and low range performance of your operator throttle lever , while still maintaining a decent idle speed at it's low range on the quadrant setting.

I was trying to set this up on my machine a couple days ago and I can’t get the RPM past 2200… When you say “tension on the governor spring“ is that just enough to take up the slack, or should the spring actually be stretched a bit? If it makes a difference, technically this is on a numbered series 185, but I don’t think it matters?

for your '49 2200 is 400 over spec. The governor limits the top rpm. Even with adjusting the stops that are about all you will get out without different weights.

If it is the numbered cub, 2300 or 2400 max rpm I think so you have a little more work to do. That has different weights in the governor.

The 185.

No matter what I did, I couldn’t make the rpm go up short of grabbing the throttle lever itself. I had my “smart friend“ over as well and both of us came away scratching our heads.
