Governor oil seal

Postby Stevo944 » Wed Aug 21, 2019 6:32 pm

I had to take the governor assembly off to repair and I need to replace the oil seal in front of the distributor. I haven’t taken the distributor off yet, but want to be sure I understand the assembly. From my manuals I imagine the seal is driven out from the front of the Cub and replaced by being driven from the distributor side back in. Can someone verify this for me before I get any deeper into this? All this over a .54 cent woodruff key..... thanks in advance.

the seal can be removed from the distributor side, do not have to remove the governor, just make sure the new seal is installed to the proper depth

Thanks, BTW the rear seal you did for me a few years back has held up wonderfully.

Hi,
Here is some info, maybe you already know.
Clean the governor gear surface the oil seal runs on, it should be flat and smooth. If there is rust or it is rough, use fine sandpaper and smooth it.

Be sure the seal lip is facing ahead when you put the seal in.
Oil the seal rubber and gear surface when you put the governor in.
Also be sure the seal lip stays facing ahead as you put the governor gear in. If the lip and rubber turn backwards, it won't seal.

There are timing marks on the idler gear, and the governor gear that should be aligned as you put the governor in.
There is 1 mark on the rear facing side of the idler gear, and 1 mark on the governor gear.
If you have the engine at number 1 cylinder TDC, the mark on the idler gear should be visible, looking in the hole from the rear, use a good light to see it.

Below are pics from TM Tractor.
The 1st pic is the idler gear. The timing mark is on the right in the pic.
The 2nd pic is the governor gear. The timing mark is on the left side in the pic. :) :tractor:

Thanks Glen, yes I have found and chalked them per the manual. The advice you give out on an almost daily basis is an asset to all of us and you deserve a ‘Thank you’ also.

There is a tool to set the seal viewtopic.php?f=1&t=94801
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
