4 cylinder runs like 2 cylinder

Postby 1954Frank » Mon Aug 12, 2019 9:31 am

Maybe I'm crazy.

Some weeks ago I read a discussion on this or another forum: someone modified a 4 cylinder tractor to run/sound like a 2 cylinder JD. That putt-putt-pause-pause sound. If I recall correctly he had it setup to fire #1 and #4 simultaneously, then 180 degrees later #2 and #3 simultaneously. Then 540 degrees of dwell, then the cycle starts over. The standard Cub firing order is 1-2-4-3, as are many other 4 bangers. So, 1 and 4 go up and down together, and 2 and 3 go up and down together. Seems like some camshaft and ignition mods could make this happen...

Did I dream this? Does anyone remember a thread like this? I asked on YT and got many response, a couple of which were useful.

Now, I'm not saying I want to do this. I'm just trying to learn something. Thanks! :tractor:

You would have to get a custom cam take 2 lobes out of the distributor and get a custom rotor to fire 2 cyls at once but it would probably be rough as could be and idle terrible.TJ

I have to ask - Why would you want to do this?
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Thanks for the responses.
In my original post I stated "I'm not saying I want to do this." It just seemed like an interesting, off-the-wall thing to do. An attention getter...
Sorry I got the firing order wrong. Still, 1342 has the pistons going up and down the same: 1 and 4 are going up as 2 and 3 are going down.
Thanks.
