International harvester U1 power unit U-1 cub engine

Postby rjfcsa » Mon Jul 29, 2019 6:29 pm

Hello all,
Been a while since I posted anything on here, but I found something I had to share. Which I do believe is a rather scarce item.

At our local tractor show, where we do a display of cub stuff, in the vendor area low and behold I about fell off my cub. There was an actual international harvester U-1 power unit for sale. Not a baler or combine takeoff but the actual U1 engine.
Well I got it bought and picked it up the next morning. It was only then that I read the tag and it is the 22nd one off the line serial number 522 with the block s.n. being
U CUBM549 G
Well let's just say I am tickled pink. :D
Me and another guy tinked with it that afternoon, no spark, there was a magneto guy there at the show. I took it to him to look at and he said coil was bad but everything thing else was in good shape. So I had him go through it as he wasn't busy, a little saltier than I would have liked, but it works. Put it on added some gas and we got it to fire up, :{_}: wished we had taken some footage of it. It came with a flat belt pulley so I might try running dads #30 corn sheller with it at a show.

A fellow cubber,
Russel Foster

I have two stationary in pieces and one on together but none have the clutch. Get catch!!!
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Will someone please post a picture of the flat belt pulley that goes on the power unit. Also what is the diameter?
I have a PU but need the pulley.

That would, sort of, depend on which power unit you have. The actual U1 or one off a baler or combine. Basically you would get whatever pulley you needed for what you where going to run. The smaller the engine pulley the less f.p.m., feet per minute, the larger the drive pulley the higher f.p.m. The motor I got came with 2 pulleys the flat belt and a multiple v-groove pulley that it broken, but the flat one is the one I wanted. The shaft out of the back is 1-7/16" diameter. I could see no marks on the flat belt pulley it is approximately 4-3/4" to 5" in diameter and I forgot to measure the length, 7 or 8"? In the owner's and parts manual for the U1 there in no mention of pulleys or part numbers, so I guess they left it up to you to source your own.

Thanks Russell. My PU is an actual U1 with the same shafts as yours. Now I just need to find a flat belt pulley the right size.
