Belly mower belt

Postby DCast99 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 6:53 pm

I'm getting a 62 Lo Boy up and running after over a year of sitting and need to get a new belt for the belly mower. Where's a good place to get one? The one that is on it (477280R1) is 139" long. I'm wondering if a 143" belt would be better since it would give the belt more space to rotate between the PTO pulley and the other two pulleys

Your local auto parts store is probably the best place to obtain a premium grade belt.

I would replace the belt with the same/original length.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The bottom of the mule drive pulleys needs to align with the horizontal drive pulley on the deck. Moving the mule drive pulleys to far up or to far down can make it easier for the belt to jump off the deck drive pulley. Put another way, the belt and the deck pulley need to be in the same plane.

I would double-check the manual and use the belt specified. I have has a lot of frustration using other than the specified belt by buying what was on the tractor and not consulting the manual. The pulleys for the mule gear should be in the middle of the range with a new belt and horizontal as Scrivet said.

That said do you do not need an oem belt. most of the belt are B series belt B-XXX where the XXX is the length in inches.

I wouldn't recommend a longer belt. There are adjustments on the mule drive that adjust the tension on the belt.
There are different types of mule drive so help me out here. If I remember right, one pulley is spring loaded to apply the tension and the other pulley is the one you adjust. Make it so that the spring loaded one is riding half way up its travel with the new belt on.

As Scrivet mentioned, both the pulleys should end up lined up with the deck pulley when the deck is lowered to the mowing position.

Thanks for the info. The mower seems to be an International bush hog with discharge on both sides. The left mule drive is at the top of adjustment while the right is at the middle. I'll take a look at their alignment with the spindle pulley later today.

You said one pulley was at the top and one midrange. I agree with the others that say it's important to have the belt and pulleys aligned. I've accidentally "eaten" belts by not checking alignment and/or reversing the twist. Not a cheap replacement for a momentary lapse of mind. If you can't find an original manual with a length listed, l'd probably opt for something between your 139 and 143. No telling if what you had was original or not.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over. :?:
