Exhaust Manifold

Postby Floridaboy » Fri Mar 15, 2019 6:34 pm

Having to replace the exhaust manifold on my 74 IH Cub. Looking at manifold I don't see a seam for where the elbow is screwed in. Were manifolds ever made exclusively for under axle exhaust with the elbow made as part of the manifold ? Thought maybe seam was covered with corrosion but tried chipping and cleaning but found nothing but steel.
thanks, MLB

Hi,
The elbow screws into the manifold.
Below is a page from the Cub parts manual showing it. The 251232R1 manifold is probably what it originally had, they changed to the newer manifold at the serial number shown.

Below is a listing at TM Tractor for a new manifold, you can look at the pics, I can't see the threads in the exhaust hole though.

Below is the elbow, the threads are visible in the pics. :)

The vertical exhaust was always an option even though not popular on the square nose. The manifold always had a removable elbow.

That being said I have a manifold with an elbow that looks like it is one piece from years of rust and heat.

Re: Exhaust Gasket replacement

Postby Floridaboy » Sat Mar 23, 2019 3:22 pm

Removed the exhaust manifold. Both inside ends of existing gaskets were non-existent, completely rotted away. Got a new set Not sure the sequence. of putting on. Planning on putting sealant on block, press on gaskets, let sealant harden for approx. one hour, put another bead of sealant on manifold
and press on block & tighten. Is this right. Thanks, MLB

Hi,
I wouldn't use sealer on the manifold gaskets, it gets hot there, and the sealer might burn off.

The engine and manifold should be flat where the gaskets are. Use a flat edge, and hold on the manifold surface, and see if it is flat. If the manifold surface is not flat, or looks rough, I would take it to an engine shop and ask them to make the sealing surface flat.
If the surface is too bad, it might need a new manifold, TM Tractor has them that look about the same as the manifold that used the IH carburetor.

Just tighten the 4 nuts evenly when putting the manifold on the engine.

Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the engine side of the manifold, it should be flat to seal well. :)
