When I put the new motor on the cub in late fall of 2016 had similar issues. Never did figure out what it was but it started when I too the air filter tube off carb, gave it a shot of starter fluid and had the battery fully charged (was still 6v and using points at that time). After that I hooked air breather tub back to carb and all was fine and has been since.
