New toy, frozen up

Postby Bigwally30 » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:17 am

Got 2 cubs the other day, one is apart and was stored inside. The other was setting outside In the rain. They said 2 years. When I got ready
to pick it up the gear shifter was frozen, the engine would not turn, the rear tires were locked, and the 2 brakes and clutch pedals stuck.
After getting it home I got the wheels to turn, shifter to move and the brakes freed up. I have been working with penetrating oil and rocking the
unit . The fan moves a little when rocking. Got 1 quart of water out of the transmission and no oil. So I'm not sure if the trans, clutch, and/or
the engine is/are locked, any ideas would be great.

Congrats on your new toys, looks good in the pictures. Clean/flush the transmission after removing the shift cover. The gears may be stuck on the shafts and will have to be freed up. Carb/fuel system will need to be checked. Lube and free all the throttle/governor linkage including the speed control lever on the governor. Clean/lube/adjust the internal parts of the distributor. After you can turn the crank with the hand crank, check the compression to see if the valves are sealing. The underslung exhaust will be in your favor, maybe the engine will free up. Keep posting on your progress and good luck. Here's one that I rescued after it sat for more than 30 years.

if you have freezing temps the water in the transmission/diff freezes locking the rear wheels and trans, once thawed out they break free

If the fan is moving so is the crankshaft. Most likely your problem is stuck valves rather than stuck pistons.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Can frozen lifters lock up the engine so completely ? My model A had a frozen lifter but it was stuck open, thought the cam would open it and you would have a miss. Also could water fill the transmission case and leak out the oil ? Maybe the PO did not put oil back in it. Been lubing the clutch
bushing in the torque tube and tapping on it, is there any other spot to lube inside the torque tube, been spraying to the rear but no luck.
Thanks for the help and ideas.

#1 Yes #2 Possible but it would have to leak out the seals and there would be evidence on the finals. #3 No. You could pull the TOB cover and see if the clutch/PP is moving when the clutch petal is pushed down. If you can get the trans in neutral, jack the rear wheels just clear of the ground and see if the trans/finals will turn. Also you can access the ring gear by removing the starter and use a pry bar/big screwdriver to check if the CS will move. Have you checked the valve train assembly and lubed it with some penetrating solution? Also make sure the fan is not binding by loosening the belts.

Hi,
You can get the tractor serial numbers from the plate on each Cub, unless the plates are gone, and figure out the year the Cubs are, from the info at the top of the page, at Cub Info.

Below is the 1955 Cub owner's manual. The experts on here recommend reading it. It has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1.
It shows where the serial number is on page 2.
There is an engine serial number also, they are different than the tractor serial number, except for some in 1947.

The Cub in your pic has a mid 1954 - mid 1958 hood, and a 1947 - mid 1954 grille. They changed styles during the years. :)

It is a 1954 by the serial number with the wrong grill. It was redone may years ago with stainless steel bolts. Sadly it was left outside
too long. I have an original owners manual and a copy of a later one, plus a photo copied parts book. This forum is a very big help, I try
to read every post as they come up daily. Thanks for all the help.

My buddy swears by soaking the cylinders with kroil. Then everyday rock the rear tires forward and reward till the pistons free up.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Had some success today, I got the clutch pedal to start moving, now I can see if the trans or engine is frozen. Still needs some more lube.
Also got the throttle and carb linkage freed up. This has taken over a month of lubing and rocking and tapping.
