Sickle bar parts/info/help/direction needed for '49 Cub SN 94912

Postby MarkG » Mon Nov 19, 2018 5:24 pm

Hello all,
We own a '49 Cub originally purchased by my wife's grandfather.
The pitman arm broke so I'm rebuilding the sickle bar and need some parts SO I would like to know if anyone can point me in the "right direction"
I am trying to find:
1-2) Two or more Mower Guards IH part # MD-989-Z (I have an old carton but it now contains"nails" :headbang) and
3) What I think is called a: Clip, Knife High Arch...but I could be wrong
Any and all help, direction or clarification would be much appreciated.
I've attached a picture of the assembly.
Thanks!

Hi,
A Case IH dealer still has parts for the Cub 22 Mower, that is what the sickle bar mower is for a Cub.

I called the dealer I buy parts from, and he said they don't make the MD 989 guards anymore, they are replaced with the heavy duty MC 2041 guard.
The bolts that hold the MC 2041 guards on go up from the bottom, so the smooth bolt head is running on the ground. That way it does not wear the end of the bolt, and the nut off.

Below is a listing at TM Tractor for the guard, you can look at it.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/sm/489fp.htm

IH uses a tapered washer type part, to fill the tapered hole on top of the bar, to use the bolts going up from the bottom. But if you put the 2 MC 2041 guards where the hold down clip goes, you don't need the washers.
The hold down clip you need in your pic would be a MA 812, it is the low clip, that number clip is made for the bolts to go up from the bottom.
You might have to buy longer bolts than the guards at TM Tractor come with, to use the guards where the clip is. They probably come with shorter bolts.
The mower uses only 1 high clip, at the inner end, where the knife head makes the knife bar thicker.

A MC 2041 guard will not fit at the outer end position, because of the curve needed on the bottom side. The easiest way would be to move one of the MD 989 guards to the outer end. You would need to move 2 of the older guards and the hold down clip that is there now, to the outer end.
Then put the 2 new MC 2041 guards on with the new hold down clip made for use with the bolts that go up from the bottom, in a position back from the outer end.

There are other ways it can be done, the dealer said before to cut the bottom of a MC 2041 guard to the curved shape to fit at the outer end.
Or you can buy a MC 2043, it is made with the curve to fit at the outer end of the bar. They cost more than a MC 2041, the last time I asked.

Below is a listing for the pitman wood, if you don't have that.

Below is TM Tractor's sickle mower parts page.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/sm/sm_001newparts.htm

Below is the Cub 22 mower owner's manual. It is for 3 different mowers on 3 different models of IH tractors. It has cutter bar maintenance info.
Some of the info is for all 3 mowers, and some is for 1 model of mower. It tells at the top of the pages when info is for 1 model of mower. :)

I’ve rebuilt my 22 mower before. The guards I got from my CaseIH dealer, but I’ve gotten a lot of stuff from Webb’s Cutting Components (formerly Webb’s Sickle Service). I’ve you’re not too concerned with originality, I highly recommend the adjustable knife clips.
