Strange Cub

Postby Wmnido » Fri Oct 12, 2018 12:59 pm

I just brought home a 1949 Farmall Cub, but it appears a previous owner flipped the rear drives, and also flipped the front steering lowering the tractor. I am relatively new to the Cub scene, so is this modification popular or something unheard of ? Also how do you post photos? I am new to this site. Thanks !

Sounds like you just brought home a Loboy.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

If it's a Loboy, it's not a '49.

Who knows what happened to it in the past? Could be a Frankintractor with a collection of different parts. :o Pictures, casting codes and SN's will help ID what this is. :hattip:

Hi,
The model of the Cub was originally on the serial number plate, but the paint can wear off the plate, and you might not be able to read it anymore.
IH started making LoBoys in 1955. The final drives are turned 1/4 turn from how the Farmall Cub is, so the rear wheels are farther ahead.
The front axle has shorter spindle shafts, to lower the front down, to match the rear.

Below is a page from the Cub parts manual, showing what a 1949 Cub looked like, in the top pic.

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/cub_ ... 000-11.jpg

Below is a page showing a newer Cub in the top pic, and the first style Loboy in the lower pic.

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/cub_ ... 000-13.jpg

The LoBoys have their own serial numbers, shown in the info on this website, at the top of the page.
They do not use Farmall Cub serial numbers.
But if someone has changed the part the serial number plate is on, then it could have the wrong plate. :)

A picture or two may help clear things up.

Hi,
Below are pics of Cub serial number plates, from TM Tractor. You can see the model is on the plate. The plates are different styles over the years.
The 1st is from a 1949 Farmall Cub.
The 2nd is from a 1958 Cub LoBoy.

Hi Wmnido, now that you have 2 posts you can access and download any of the manuals that interest you. They're at the Quick links tab at the top left corner of this page, go to pdf manuals and browse the folders there. Lots of valuable information for IH tractors and implements as well as some aftermarket equipment.

I think I have seen this tractor listed in California before. The finals are reversed from the conventional Loboy to extend the wheel base. The hood looked like a 49 with the three ribs on the side. The front axle may have been nonadjustable. Was it in Grass Valley?
