The data plate on my tractor is unreadable except for the ser # stamped on the plate. 199153 with a Letter J. What does the letter J represent.

Re: Letter J on the data plate
The Cub came from the factory with two types of clutches. The Rockford and the Auburn. The letter J indicates that the Cub is equipped with the Rockford clutch.

Re: Letter J on the data plate
My son has a 300 Utility that has the J. I was curious if it was the same. Had not found the info relating to the Cub. The Utility has the Rockford clutch.

Re: Letter J on the data plate
FYI...if you don't plan to replace your serial number plate, a forum member here, Tim Talleur (forum name tst), makes an overlay, that basically restores the original look (with black & silver background), but has a transparent section allowing your serial number to be visible. I have used one, and it looks quite good. You can send tst a PM.

...and sometimes, even though the S/N plate has a 'J' on it, doesn't mean that when you attempt to adjust the clutch fingers, you discover that you have an Auburn clutch! But hey, we were running out of things to do at Cecil's in 2012.

Hi,
Info about the letters after the serial number on the serial number plate is in the Cub parts manual.
Here is the page below.

The serial number without the suffix indicates the Auburn clutch.

Re: Letter J on the data plate
Hi,
I think the first few years of Cubs didn't use the suffix letter for the clutch brand.
I looked through the Cub parts manual, TC-37A, which was made in 1949, and I don't see any suffixes shown.
The page in my post above is from manual TC-37F, made in the 1970's.
The Rockford clutch has 6 coil springs.
The Auburn clutch has 3 coil springs, it calls it an Atwood clutch in the 1949 parts manual.
The full name it shows is Atwood Vacuum Machine Company.
The Auburn name is in the TC-37F manual.
Maybe Jim B. knows about the suffixes on earlier Cubs.

Re: Letter J on the data plate
The Rockford clutch is pretty much the only one available as an aftermarket part.
They are also easier to adjust through the handhole in the torque tube.

Because God forbid, we add new information to an older discussion, while also potentially saving an additional search.....

As others have said, I think the suffix codes showed up on the tags later on the Louisville Farmalls compared to the bigger models made elsewhere. My granddaddy's Super A was a kerosene burner but there's nothing on the tag about it.
Also, I would bet dollars to donuts that if an early tractor got a clutch/pressure plate replacement later in life, it got a new rockford style clutch.
