Planter ID?
Can anyone tell me what model planter I have? I am leaning towards 172 or 174 from looking at the parts book. What are the differences? The tractor is a 1959 but the planter is not original to the tractor. Thanks for any input.

Re: Planter ID?
Looks like others have got you covered on the planter. I used to get in your neck of the woods regularly by visiting the "Big Boys' Toy Store," but since they moved to Thompson, I don't get to Montville as often.

You Sir have the 172 runner planter with the Richmond corn hopper!
Check out the manual for the differences in the manual section!

I dont think that sighting rod is the proper one.
The factory one shown in the manual looks like a L, and mounts to the headlight mount!
Happy tractoring

Thank you, I will check out the manuals. The sight rod is an aftermarket one. It does mount to the headlight but it was not bent right. Since this pic was taken I have put more of a bend in it so it's straight up and down now.

Bill, I miss the toy store! It was only 2 mins away from me. I purchased the rear set of cultivators on this tractor from you, maybe 2 or 3 years ago?

After studying your pictures more, the shadows, and angles of view kinda hides the mounting details of the runner , and I really can not say for sure.
The runner is where the big difference is.
(Edit: I saw a pressure spring attached to the toolbar of the planter and the pivot of the universal mounting frame in the 174 planter manual, this is where my confusion began thinking the runners was differemt between the models, my 172 does not have that pressure spring setup, and I never saw one that did, I dont think it is even shown in my 172 manual, but my manual is not with me to confirm!)
There is a good pic of the factory sighting rod if you wanted to cut yours down to something closer to the proper length.
Someone on here might even know the correct length.
I have the 172, but did not get the chains or the sighting rod

I will get a couple pics tomorrow of the runner setup. I will do a search for the sight rod too. I would like it to be the proper length too. Thanks

Re: Planter ID?
I would be curious to know what the differences are between the 172 and 174, now that it has been asked.

Re: Planter ID?
I was thinking there was a difference in the runner, but on second look I think I am wrong!
I do not see any mention of the Richmond corn hopper in the 174 manuals!
They are really simular!
