Super H Charging system anomoly

Ive Got a 53 Super H, still 6 VOLT that has been giving me fits all summer. Had the generator, spare generator and 3 regulators out 3X and to a starter, generator, motor shop 3x and they all check out OK. up until tonight grounding the frame of the regulator or the Field or polarizing the regulator had no effect on getting things working.

Tractor was SCREWED with by a previous owner, he installed key switch. built a "custom Battery holder in order to use the under seat space for a tool box.

I installed a complete new wiring harness (99% all but the rear light harness) & battery cables sized for the 6volt load. re-installed the battery in its proper location

Tonight I reinstalled things again and polarized the regulator and got it to register a charge for a short while, it would even run with the ground battery cable disconnected for a few minutes and then die, I could repeat the process. turning on the headlights on high would immediately throw the ammeter into a discharge. Ive got 2 new batteries that both have been tried. Ive checked the schematic multiple times

Why did you unhook the ground cable while it was running? That can damage the charging system.

Is it 6V POSITIVE ground?

My guess is a bad ground somewhere in your system or something is up with your voltage regulator.
 
At this point I would have a tendency to rule out a bad ground as I have a jumper wire running from the frame of the regulator directly to the ground battery cable and it still displays the same behavior.

The regulator and generator both have been to the shop and tested multiple times.

Maybe I missed it but what isn't working?
The only issue I see not self inflicted is it registering a charge for a short while. Which I take it to mean then it wasn't charging. But if you have a good battery it won't take it long to get back to 100% and then it won't charge anymore. So I would take that to be normal operation since you have 2 new batteries. Which leads me back to what exactly is giving you fits?

It won’t stay charging! Polarize the generator start the tractor @1/2 throttle it will show a charge on the meter. Turn on the lo beam headlights takes the meter to 0 amps/slight discharge on the meter, high beam takes it fairly deep into discharge. Turning off the headlights it stays in discharge. Shutting off & restart still in discharge. Re-polarizing & restarting, starts it charging again for a short while and can be repeated with the lights
