Since I installed a cylinder on the rear and added 2 x 36" extensions to current hoses I have obviously reduced the oil in the reservoir. I don't want to just top off the reservoir (unless I can) with oil because I don't know what oil is in there and I have read that you shouldn't mix 2 oils. So I am thinking I should drain and replace:

Can oils be mixed?
Is it important to remove and clean the screen (easier external access than a Cub)?
When working the oil into the system to remove air should the fill plug be in or out?

I use the hydraulics to futz around the yard....not hard use at all.
 
My recommendation would be to drain and refill. Any good quality 1207 or 1209 compatible hydraulic fluid will work. TSC and NAPA both sell suitable fluids. Might as well clean the screen while you have it drained. As you said, it is much easier than on a Cub. Have a new gasket ready to install. The fill plug should be out, or at least loose, to bleed the air. When draining the system, remove the fill plug first, then the drain plug. Otherwise, you may get an oil bath.
 
Talked to CaseIH dealer and he said they can't get gaskets for the strainer. He said to get some gasket paper and make one...so another new thing to try.
