Starter Relay or Switch?

I recently purchased a Cub Cadet 582. Tractor is in great shape and I'm happy with the purchase. The starter switch has stopped working. I can start it by jumping the starter relay with a scewrdriver. My question is whether the starter relay is bad or the switch? Could it be something else? Thanks
 
My first thought is the PTO switch. Try to start and have some one else turn the Pto switch on & off and if you hear the starter make any noise that is the problem.
 
Well, I had an interesting on on my 782. All the interlocks checked out as did the pto switch. However, the wire from the solenoid (12 volt supply) to the ammeter was open?????????? Replaced that wire and my problem was solved. Unless there's another device that isn't shown in the wiring diagram the wire has to be open. Since I didn't strip down the wire bundle to be sure, I just verified that all the known interlocks were working and they are. Would not have believed it.

That wire on a 782 is the battery feed, through the ammeter, to the ignition switch. If it was open, 782 no startee.
 
Paul, that was an unusual situation. My wife had just started the tractor and had not idled it up yet and it died. When she went to re-start it - nothing. I ran a clip on lead from the battery to the coil and jumped the solenoid to start it and get it into the shop. Of course, without disecting the wire bundle I won't be able to tell what exactly happened to the wire but I clipped off the connector at the solenoid end which had a little corrosion on it (not bad for 25 year old wiring) an that wasn't the problem. Anyway, it's running now and my grandson will be happy!
 
The switch for the clutch would not strike anything. When I tried to figure what would push the button I could find nothing. Wife found the part in the yard that broke off. I bypassed the switch and I'm good to go.

Eugene: if that includes shipping it's about correct and you got the newer switch part # 925-0893 which lists for 30.40 on the web site where I check prices. The earlier 582 used 925-3005 for $21.40
 
The PTO switch came from a Cub Cadete dealer. They had to order the switch - so the price probably includes postage and of course local sales tax.
