Sickle bar mower

Son (2, 3 in July) has started watchig Just a Few Acres (On Youtube). Anyways Pete (may be a member on here) has a sickle bar mower on an H. I was mowing a pasture just now with my woods belly mower on the 300 and was thinking a sickle bar mower would do a better job. So was wondering what model is it that fits on the H Series tractors?

Thanks in advance

There are several mowers that could be used. Trailing mowers such as the New Idea of years ago could be used behind any tractor. I would prefer a mounted or semi-mounted. I have cut many acres many years ago (1950's) with an H and an IH semi-mounted. Can't give you the model number however. The swinging drawbar was swung to one side and the mower was bolted rigid to the drawbar. There wasn't any left-right movement between the tractor and mower but the mower could could move up and down A square corner was easy once you got the hang of it. This would be my choice if one could be found. I have also seen a picture, once, with an H and mower mounted between the front and the right rear wheels. Manfacturer unkown. Odd ball but interesting. If you come across an old Brillion mower - conditioner the mower is is an IH. Probabaly a lot of work remove even if possible. Jim Becker would know I'm quite sure about IH mowers that fit an H. sickle mower in pasture grass is useless!! they will only drag up and break away trips then you get off and clean it out , go another 10 feet and do it again! STAY with a bush hog and never look back!!!!

For our “H”, we had the same semi mounted IH mower that Vern mentioned and also, like him, I don’t know the model number but that was a very good mower.

A little internet research comes up with two IH semi-mounted mowers, the 1000 and the 120. Hope this helps.
Here’s a Youtube of the 120.

Fully mounted included the 16H, H-24, and HM-24. The semi-mounted with a tail wheel included the 27V. There were probably others in both categories.

our neighbor had the 27v on his H all the time to mow alfalfa hay with. --- used it for years til he passed away! this was back in the late 50's early 60's. We had a New Idea semimount on the 36 B John Deere at the same time and would help each other mow hay with them. Had a Deere #5? after we wore the NI out beyond fixin, then a MM, then I started using haybines and never looked back!!

Been mowing with sickle mowers since I was old enough to drive tractor. I am 76. Have 3 bush hogs and several sickle bars and tractors. When you have rocky old mountian farm fields you need a sickle bar. With the bush hog you can beat yourself and the mower to death and burn up all your fuel and get little done. Most times a sickle bar with the knifes touching the ledger plates and the knives as far forward into the gards will not plug. Today I only use side mount sickle bars mostly an 110 IH 7 ' balanced but also a cub 22 where the rocks are close.
