Rear wheel fluid

Ok, am so close to putting my 49 Cub to work. But I want to check the fluid in the back wheel gears. I found the plug - looks like it takes a really big allen wrench but not sure. What do I need and size?? As always I appreciate the help. Dennis
 
You can check the owners manual for the details but the plug on the left side is to check the transmission level. Take a look at the photos on TM Tractor website. As for the final "bull gears", you should remove the pains, clean all the gook out and check the top edge for deform metal at the bolt holes and straighten them as needed. You'll need new gaskets and some 80-90 wt gear oil for each one. The pans have to be filled before reinstalling on the housings. JMHO Stan

I have seen several different plugs, but I believe the most common is a 1/2" square hole. This allows you to use a half inch ratchet. I usually add a stubby extension just to clear the tire.

If this is the first time you have serviced the finals, I agree with Stan's suggestion to remove the final pans to remove gunk, as well as check for any metal particles that might indicate an issue.
 
OK, I have an original Owners Manual (1948) so I looked it up there and I messed up! There is a fill/check level plug on the lower side of the final housing (reference Lubrication Guide, page 18 and page 21. Dale's info is correct about the tools to remove it. Sorry, Stan

Here's the promised Lubrication info from the Owners Manual. These pages are from the 1955 manual but it's basically the same except for the illustration numbers are different. Level check/fill plug is #24 on the diagram. Stan

Thanks all for the help. Probably will drop the pans when my gaskets come in but can atleast check the fluid now.
