Radiator Plug

Been working on trying to remove the drain plug for the radiator. Believe I went through half a bottle of acetylene and $20 worth of Kroil before it actually moved. The head of the plug is rounded off pretty bad, and I would like to replace the plug. Where would I purchase such an item? Is the plug something a hardware or plumbing supply store stock?

Be careful with the torch. that casting can crack with too much heat.

Any hardware store will have a plug. You could also install a ball valve so you can drain a little at a time instead of a plug that will let everything gush out at once.

The casting has cracked at some point and was repaired. I was aware too much heat would cause a problem with cast iron. The idea was to heat the area around the plug enough so the Kroil would wick into the threads of the plug. I'd get it hot, cool with Kroil, tap with hammer, then spray again. Would do this a couple of times throughout the evening. The process worked very well loosening the radiator bolts with the exception of one where the head snapped off the second I applied pressure to loosen. Believed I would have that plug loose in a couple of hours. Well, that turned out to be a couple of hours for three nights. Haven't removed the plug yet, wanted to know if I was able to purchase locally at a supply store first.

It's just a 3/8 pipe thread plug.

I prefer a hex head plug so when it comes time to pull it out you can put a six point socket on it. We used them all the time at work.

A plug with the square works equally well if you use the proper socket.

The more you work with these tractors, the more you find that many parts came from the industrial parts bin…couple of examples…the headlight posts and the brake clevises. Both are standard items that you can pick up at McMaster.

I battled with mine about 6 years ago. Never came free. I just pull the lower rad hose if I have to drain it.

Bring it to a CubFest and it'll get fixed.
