I was into the 70's/80's husqvarna dirtbikes. The swede's made overkill tranny's that they could use the same tranny on there 250cc bikes, 390cc, 430cc, 490cc and all the way up to the 500cc bikes. Since there tranny was used on the 500cc bikes they were bullet proof for the smaller engines. These were the fastest dirtbikes on the planet and even today with speeds over 100mph++(life before two stroke exhaust valves)
My point is its the same with the Int. cub and the cub cadet line too one tranny was used for them all no matter what horsepower.
We wonder what really caused this over the years and it was do to computers that turned the tide. Using stress analysis on the computer they could save material and make it borderline just to do the job. This is why the new stuff won't last as long as the older stuff does. Before the computers were used they would overkill what ever they designed so it would last.
Back in the 70's and the 80's the japanese did this too with there motorcycles too. The old honda and suzuki street bikes and even the early two stroke dualsport bikes were overkilled in the design too. This is why we still see them around today.
When we look at the gravely tractors they were built solid too with a rock solid design too.
I really can't justify spending 2 to 3k for a new tractor when there is so many good older ones around that are built better. Just looking at an older tractor and seeing the larger castiron tranny housings makes me think there well designed and built to last for many years. The 122 cub cadet i just picked up came from the orginal owner. He repowered it about ten years ago and added a new paint job with new decals. At ten years ago that puts it at '97? That tractor lasted that long without being touched. I think were going in the right direction and if i'm right the future generations of my family will enjoy these too. I figure to restore each tractor to its orginal new condition and just tune and change the oil for many years after that. We owe it to the older engineers they knew what they were doing without the high tech gagets they have today. I still think they have lost something between the old and the new engineers with the passing of the torch we just don't do it exactly right anymore everything is cheapened to the point we live in a throw away and we tend to buy new over and over. Everything i purchased brand new i have had problems with it. I don't want anything new anymore I'm tired of paying big bucks for stuff that doesn't hold up.
