Step one for joining any new forum... the introduction.

Hey there.

Not only a new guy to the forum, but new to tractors in general. Prior to 2 days ago, I've only had riding mowers. As of now, I have a Lo-Boy 185... with real gears, giant tires (even if they are turf tires) and a 3 point hitch. I don't really have a NEED for it either... lol. All little boys like to play with tractors though, it just took me 62 years to get a real one. Being an old fat cripple now, I don't get around like I used to, so I plan to bet a boom for the 3 point and use it to lift/carry heavy stuff for me. It's is decent shape, so I may even fix her up and do parades...

I'm U.S. Army retired/disabled (28 years, most of that with the guard) so I'm living on my VA disability. That means I'm always looking for a bargain. I had sold one of my rifles to get some cash, and had some left over... this was only $500 on Facebook... so... why not? I also worked in law enforcement, (campus police at 2 different universities... not a "real" cop) and spent 10 years in a maximum security prison (as a correctional officer) I've done everything from residential treatment with troubled boys, to working a tire shop, to the normal boyhood mowing of lawns, and a paper route. Now, all banged up (from an IED in Iraq 2005) I do silly crap like buy a tractor I don't need... Wife (of 30 years) is a teachers aid, the kids (one of each) both (still single) were home for thanksgiving, so that was nice. I have a TBI service dog, Sophie, and she does pretty good. Her predecessor, Brandy, is the world famous "if your dog poops, pick it up" dog. Just google it. You'll see me holding Brandy. She was a 91 pound German Shepherd. Actually she was fat when that photo was taken, about 111# IIRC. RIP Brandy girl.

So, I know what you all want... here it is... the new (50 years old) tractor. We got hit with that big snowstorm right after I brought it home, so I haven't played with it but a few minutes as of yet.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your service. There's a few of us vets on the forum. You might consider placing a Wanted add on the classified forum the VINE or check with forum sponsor Hamilton Bob for your missing dash (I think it's the same as a 154) and any other parts. SN plate on the front of the left frame rail next to the radiator cowl will give you the info needed to ID the year model. Stan

Hi,
Below are the LoBoy 154, and 185 operator's manuals. They have lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. The experts on here recommend people read the manual for your tractor. They have pictures of what the tractors looked like when they were new.
There is a contents beginning on page 1, that makes it easier to use online.

Below is a picture of a 154 serial number plate, I think it is a reproduction, but I'm not sure.
It looks like the tractor model name is on the plate. On the Farmall Cubs serial number plates, the black paint fades away, then you can't read the model name, and other words. The LoBoys like yours may do that too. If it is faded, try using a good light and try to read it. :)

Thanks for providing the link to the manuals. Learned something already...
Who would have thought that an ancient design... from 50+ years ago... using a flathead engine would require 91 octane gas...?
That floored me.

Keep in mind that is 91 Research octane. Motor octane is typically 6 to 10 less with the same fuel. Gas pumps are labeled with the average of the 2 numbers. That translates to regular grade unleaded.

Welcome! Cool looking tractor! $500 is a great deal!

I too bought my first tractor a couple years ago with no real need for one. I just always wanted to have one haha! They're fun to mess around with and easy to work on. I've seen many tractors like yours with belly mowers up to 60". The huge turf tires look cool!

Thanks for your service and enjoy your new tractor!
