New experience I could have skipped

I’ll be 62 in a couple weeks and I guess there was something I haven’t covered in life that had to be checked off… a heart attack.
Yup, Sunday morning I got up and started having “heartburn” (clue #1) I took some Tums and pepto but it didn’t help. As I went about my morning chores it quickly got worse. My “left” arm felt like it got hit with a hammer (clue #2). Then I started feeling nauseous and was sweaty (clues 3&4). I’ve got 30+ years of first responder training and if it was happening to anyone else I’d see it for what it was immediately but here it was happening to me ! In kinda disbelief I couldn’t ignore the signs so I woke Paula and called 911.
First aid got to my door in 4 minutes with paramedics right on their heals. They worked on me in the house and acknowledged yes I’m having a heart attack and they worked on me all the way to the hospital. Once there they ran my gurney across the hospital right into surgery. One of my hearts arteries (the widow maker) was completely blocked, nothing passing. They opened it up and put a stent in. Hooked up to everything I spent a couple restless days in CCU.
Medical science is amazing now though as the went in they my wrist to do this. Years ago they would’ve cracked open my chest and I would’ve had a much longer stay in the hospital. Amazingly I’m home now, very sore and bruised up, feel like I got punched in the chest but because I called fast and didn’t shrug it off, because EMS responded so fast and because the doctor was already at the hospital ready to go he said I will have no permanent damage to my heart !
I’m a lucky bastard ! I will have to take a fistful of meds each day including cholesterol, bp, and blood thinners till I die because of the stent but it beats the alternative ;)
Sorry to have scared my family and friends though. The hospital visits were constant and my phone was blowing up. If you ever want to know if you life has value something like this will let you know. :big crying:

What an experience to go through! So glad you acted when you did and got medical help.

You’re not lucky, and not a bastard. You are a unique individual who did not procrastinate and ignore the obvious. That makes you wise in our eyes.

May the Lord continue to give you good health and we’re thankful for you!

Blessings to you , Mike!

At least your brain finally kicked your butt, and you realized what was happening!! Those years of training DID help, and I'm so happy you are doing well!!

Hugs to you and Paula!

Thank you all ! Life will change some for me and there are adjustments to be made but I’m still here. You know the one thing that would really bother me if I kicked it now would be all the projects left unfinished ;)

Yes having a heart attack will result in changes and an appreciation for what is really important. Things, even projects not finished don't really matter, as much as that issue bothered me too. I did not recognize the signs which started one afternoon in 2007 and the next morning I went to the ER. Initially the doc thought I was having lower GI issues but then went 'flat line'. They told me that my heart restarted "on its own" as they stood over me getting ready to use the paddles. The Lord was gracious, recovery was slow but a good time to think about the relationships that really matter, especially with my Lord, and I am blessed in many ways. As you continue to recover I am praying with you and for you.

That was close! You are a very blessed man! Very happy to hear that you are going to be ok.
God bless medical science and all the advances they have available today.

Mom had a similar incident at about 60 or so with the Widow maker. Same as yours 90 some percent blocked, only she had no symptoms other than tired. An irregularity showed up on her EKG, and a sharp doctor, who knew her family history had it checked out.
They fixed it, and had to redo it a time or two since, but never has been a problem.
Its been over 25 years ago, and Mom will be 87 this fall, Lord willing.

Good to hear. Was kinda impervious to what the world threw at me always bouncing back strong but I didn’t bounce so high on this one. Almost didn’t bounce at all. Feeling kinda frail this past week but I’m getting better. This one was hit me hard.
