need some help

I need some expert opinion I removed the oil pan on an H Im restoring for the Father in law and found 2- 3/8 X 1 3/4 fine thread bolts in the oil pan . I didn't go looking because it was late in the evening and I had already cleaned up. Can someone tell me where these bolt could have come from in the bottom end of the engine. Thanks Steve

Been along time since I was in an H (probably 35 or 40 years), but being fine thread I would think bearing cap. maybe left over form a previous reapir?

Are they drilled head bolts? All the rod caps are drilled and safetied.

There isn't much down there but main bolts, rod bolts, and the bolts for the oil pump. If bolts that size had fallen out of something and were currently missing, you certainly would've noticed a problem while running the tractor.

Then again, if the tractor wasn't running when you tore it down... Look around see if you can see any open holes. Should be obvious if anything's missing.

Since the bolts are fine thread you can eliminate a lot of possibilities. Fine threads are seldom, if ever, used in cast iron. That rules out a lot of them. (this doesn't apply to cast steel like crankshafts, etc.).

My thought is they are probably rod bearing bolts. Could be from some other place.

Steve you didn't say that you found any nuts or stray pieces of wire in the pan. Suggest checking the rod caps to see that all 8 bolts are identical.

I use a large container (dish pan or similiar) when doing engine work. I just throw all of the bolts and small parts in the pan. Perhaps the previous mechanic use the pan to hold the small parts.?????

As I said, I am very rusty on an H, but is there a possiblity that at a previous time someon working on an upper part of the engine droppped them throuh a return oil passage and just replaced them rather than pulling the pan? also might check the 2 bolts that hold the oil filter screen.

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't been able to get back to the barn to do more investigation. I will be off duty tomorrow so I will do some looking after I shoot a coat of primer on the sheet metal. Steve
