What is the correct color of the engine and shrouds on a 1971 "129"? I've looked at a lot of pictures and have seen all kinds of variations. All yellow; yellow with black starter/gen.; all black; black engine with yellow shroud, yellow air cleaner and black starter/gen.; all black except yellow air cleaner.

Also, is the voltage reg. suppose to be mounted in the battery compartment?

Originally the tractor and engine (including starter) was all yellow, with just a white hood, grill, dash panel/tower, gas tank & supports, and transmission tunnel cover. The reason you see so many with black engines, or black starters, is that the Kohler replacement engines come from Kohler painted black, and most electrical repair shops re-paint starters black when they rebuild them.

I actually think the black engine and starter looks better than the yellow on the 1x8/1x9 series tractors, as the yellow paint on engines will turn a brown color due to the heat, oil, gas, etc.

Here is a 149 that I used to have. Same tractor only with a 14 hp engine instead of the 12hp in a 129.

The correct color for a wide frame engine was the same yellow as the rest of the tractor. The starter however was black.

All replacement Kohler engines were black.

Ken Updike and Hank Wills books on Cub Cadets shows the wide frame engines painted the way I stated.
