Kohler k241 tips?

I'm still fiddling with the 108. I set gap on points tonight and started up. It was dark and I noticed the exhaust was getting flame and started to glow so I shut down. Pulled air filter cover and also notice fuel on filter. Next I'm planning on checking valve clearance. Is there anything else I should be checking here? Symptoms prior are hard starting and needs to be 3/4 or better throttle to run. Seemed to be losing power under load and backfiring as well. I've soaked carb and shot out with cleaner. New plug, air filter and set gap on point. I set the carb to 2 turns on high idle and 2 1/2 on low. Don't think I'm missing anything I've done. Hopefully did it all correctly... any tips?

Two possible causes; ignition timing and/or valves not seating.

Easiest, check the point gap. Correctly setting the point gap is critical for correctly ignition timing the engine.
 
Two things come to mind: Carb to lean and timing. Setting point gap may not get it right. You need to use your multiguage on the point and rotate till contact then check the timing mark to make sure it is centered correctly. Initial setting on carb then adjust by ear.
 
My log splitter was acting the same exact way as your k241. I gave it a new spark plug, and it ran fine after that.
 
Thanks for the tips fellas. Adjusted the valves and she will idle down (and stay running) and the exhaust doesn't look like an afterburner. I have a little surging at full throttle right now and it won't "open up" all the way. I'm thinking that may be the spring between the throttle cable. Or am I off base there? The misses have smoothed out still see one every now and again. Nothing like before though. Hopefully some fine tuning in the morning and I'll get to play with it a little tomorrow.
 
Well I think we can ring up a success. Tugging the plow in 2nd without an issue. Still doesn't seem to be running as fast as I'd expect but maybe I'm off there? I don't have a tach to add on. It is running strong though it seems. I noticed some blow by so I have a feeling I'll be getting to know these kohler k series motors even better at some point. My phone pics are too big to add I'll have to get inside and add them. More "work" to do first.
