Tongue on my IH, model unknown, heavy duty trailer type brush hog has developed a crack, has been repaired several times, is no longer straight, and the mower no longer trails behind the tractor. Forgot to mention, age of the mower is unknown, probably 50 years or so.

As I was removing the PTO shaft from the mower, wife asked if it would be cheaper to buy a new mower. Told wife that a new mower of this quality would cost well over $2000-. Wife asked if it would cost that much to repair the tongue. Told wife that I expected the materials would cost about $120- and that I had the equipment to remanufacture the tongue.

Tomorrow, back the mower out of the shop so that it's out of the way and remove the tongue.

Really don't want to replace this mower, it's extremely heavy duty, used to mow pasture and the current rock crop. It's a horse.

Bit of research, mower is a McCormick-IH model 26, built from 57 - 62. Messick's lists the hitch/tongue, so it may still be available. Worth a phone call since I need the hitch and the PTO shaft mounting bracket.

Eugene, do you have any pictures of this trailer type mower? I, for one, would love to see what one looks like.

Got the tongue removed from the mower. Found the bracket on the hitch and on the mower, and attachment pin each have about 1/4 inch of wear. Also found that the shimming washers were place outside the pin and not between the tongue and mower portion of the hitch. Causing a lot of slop in the tongue.

Purchased the hitch repair parts, about $14-. Will still need to weld up the crack in the tongue.

Latest screw up. Wenched the mower deck onto the 18" foot tandem axled trailer. Pulled the mower deck up, over, and in front of the trailers fenders to center the load. Then figured out that we had no way to unload the mower at son's house.

Next day son is off, we will use the skid steer to unload the mower deck. Most of the work on the deck can take place in the acreage shop.
