Long time member, new cub owner. I can see a bend in the steering rod looking down from the seat . Steering is very hard. I have searched steering issues in old posts. Need some coaching on where to start, and if the bend can actually cause the steering to be really hard. Also where and what manuals to order. Thanks to all for sharing. Steve

I'm not sure which rod you mean, the long shaft from the steering wheel to the steering gear, or the tie rods, at the front of the Cub, that go out to the front wheels.
If the long shaft with the steering wheel on it is bent, that can make a binding at the upper support, and probably at the lower end of it too.
That shaft, or the tie rods can be removed, and heated to red hot, and straightened, unless they are bent lots.
I meant the long shaft from the wheel to the steering gear. The cub was shipped from Illinois to North Dakota and the guy on the other end picked it up with a big tractor and set it on the shippers trailer so he may have wrapped a strap on the outside of the steering shaft without thinking since they run su close to the body. It’s the only thing I can think of that would put a slight but visible bend in about the middle of the shaft.Hi,

If you remove the steering shaft, there is supposed to be a thick thrust washer at the bottom end of the shaft. It can fall off into the oil in the housing. Be sure it is in place before putting the shaft in again.
The gear on the lower end of the shaft screws into mesh with the other gear in the housing.
After removing the 2 bolts, turn the steering wheel to get the shaft out.
Be careful as the lower end separates from the housing, there is a gasket there, if you move it a small amount you can see if it is coming off with the bearing, or staying on the housing. Part of it could be stuck to either surface. If parts of it are stuck to both surfaces, you can use a knife, and try to free the gasket to 1 surface, so it doesn't tear, and maybe it can be reused.
Below is a page from the Cub and LoBoy service manual showing the lower end of the shaft, in the upper picture on the page. The 2 parts number 4 are the washers.

When it is together again, you could change the steering gear oil. It should be filled to the oil level plug hole, which is the middle of the 3 holes with plugs in them.
