Guys I am wondering if you all think a magneto puts out a hotter spark then a distributor. I know it may be other factors but it takes a long time for my Super A to start. I have had 3 A"s that had Mags that started much better. Thanks, Ed

JMHO, but there's a multiple series of conditions and events that contribute to either slow or quick starting. Just a few: compression, tuneup, fuel delivery system, timing, temperature, choke (or lack of), correctly functioning spark advance, etc. A conventional coil output is in the range of 20,000 volts. I believe a mag coil is rated somewhat higher that that. I'm sure others will share their thoughts. Stan

Magneto or battery ignition system, both, how hot the spark. Coil voltage will build up in the coil until it can overcome the resistance of the rotor gap, spark plug wire, spark plug resister, and the spark plug gap. Then it will fire the spark plug.
Edit: Potential magneto spark voltage is around 20K volts, the same as the battery ignition system.

Make sure the points are clean, good condenser and coil. Cap and wires need to be good,--- same as with a mag. Dist is MUCH more reliable than ancient mags were! --- Make sure your timing is set right. You have to set it by ear with the motor running, --- cant set it by books cause each motor can be a bit different due to wear.
