Does anyone have a drawing or picture of a flax brake? This is the saw horse looking thing used to break the fibers loose in the flax stem.

A little Yahoo search and viola!

I didn't mean to ignore the question but have been absent for a while.

Flax grows into a long weedy looking plant about 2' long or so. If you peel it open and remove the innards these are used by a weaver to make linen. I grew a bit of it one year just to see the blue flowers. There is a variety grown for the seed to make - i believe it is lineseed oil - and another variety grown to make linen.

The flax brake is used to crush the outside of the stalk and separate it from the inner stem.

My daughter is somewhat craft minded and I was thinking of growing some for her to make some linen.
