Flat Belt Question

I got a flat belt recently from a farm sale that is good but is really stiff. I will completely unroll it and at the very end it crackles and I don't want to unroll it anymore in fear of breaking it. It is still good, it has just sat really long. I was wondering if there was a solution that I could douse it in to make it less stiff? Could I Just use water? Or will I just have to roll it out and let it sit. Thanks for your help.

Is it leather, canvas, rubber, etc? Is it long enough that you could cut off the stiff end and splice it back together and still be useable?

Google "flat belt splicing". You either use a tool or hammer to connect a piece to either end of the belt that interlocks and is held together with a long pin.
